Music Charts #6…

February 3rd, 1984

So we’ve jumped ahead a couple of years, thanks to the water damage mentioned in the notes about the charts.

This would’ve been a real meh! chart for me back then. About the only two songs I would’ve liked were In A Big Country by Big Country—still one of my all time favourite bands, who’s albums I still play regularly—and This is Not a Love Song by P.I.L. (I still like this and a lot of their music, even though I stopped liking Lydon way back in the late 80s. Back then it was because he told Richard Wilkins that Nelson Mandela was “nothing but a terrorist” when asked about the Free Nelson Mandela movement but nowadays it’s because he’s nothing but a fat, whiny, right-wing cunt). Even the Siouxsie & the Banshees cover of a Beatles song leaves me a bit cold because back then it felt like a total sell-out by the band.

Music Charts #5…

April 16th, 1982

Well, this week is pretty good. The usual mix of risible crap and sparkling gems but with some real classics. Highlights being Depeche Mode’s debut single, plus classics from Kraftwerk, The Stranglers, The Jam, Vangelis, Godley & Creme, Jon & Vangelis, and Madness, amongst others. Lowlights being Bernie Higgins, Cliff Richard, and Shakin’ Stevens.

Music Charts #4…

January 29th, 1982

Christ this is a painful one. Sure, you have some absolute classics from the likes of Johnny Warman, Pete Shelley, The Police, The Cars, and Laurie Anderson but then you have Barry Manilow, and Bucks Fizz in the fucking top 10.

42 years ago to the day; it was certainly a very different time.

Music Charts #2…

October 16th, 1981

At first glance I thought this was another shit week of music but the longer I looked the more I realised I liked a lot of it–again, viewing through the rose-coloured glasses of time and nostalgia. Obviously, as usual there are some real stinkers but also a lot of great tracks, and a couple of bona fide classics (looking at you, Ghost Town).
